Print Media and the Advertising Industry
The advertising industry has used traditional print media since Gutenberg invented the printing press. Everything from newspapers and magazines to product packaging and business cards uses this form of media. However, in this day and age, advertisers have been using more and more online media such as banner ads, social media ads and Android/iPhone advertising or mobile media. Since advertisers have gone to these forms of advertising the print media industry has seen a decline, particularly for the newspaper industry. For the syndicated newspaper industry revenue has fallen from $7,653 million in 2000 to $3,777 million in 2011.
Nonetheless, print media is not completely dead and, in my humble opinion, it never will be. People still enjoy curling up with a good magazine. Magazines offer a plethora of interesting topics including fashion, current affairs/news subjects, hobbies, sports and business, just to name a few. A lot of business and trade magazines cover subjects from specific industries such as electronics and financial issues. There are many other topics covered in trade magazines catering to a niche audience.
Other forms of print media include coupons, direct mail i.e. postcards, billboards and posters. These forms of advertising will never die, therefore keeping print media alive and well for the foreseeable future.
